Self Publishing to Promote Your Name, Part I

Filed under: Book Publishers, Self Publishing — Book Publishers Expert @ 5:43 am

No matter what business you happen to be involved in, marketing is always a significant component in making sure that the products and services that you offer are introduced to your target audience. Perception is reality in the world of marketing and companies in all industries will go to great lengths to ensure that they are perceived in a particular way in order to generate interest. Once people are interested they can be motivated to make a purchase; fail to get their attention and you are not likely to inspire them to take the time to learn more about your company, let alone what you have to offer.

When getting your name out there in order to raise the public’s level of awareness about what you have to offer is critical there are many ways in which to market yourself – regardless of your industry. Even writers, who are essentially marketing themselves – promoting their own name, must do their due diligence in order to get the attention of their audience.

In traditional terms, writers are promoted through their book publishing company. Book publishers who are interested in publishing a book will typically market the book in order to generate interest among the public and subsequently generate sales; the point, after all, is that everyone makes money in the deal. But the level of marketing that book publishers provide for authors and their books is very much dependent on the amount of notoriety that the author already has in the book publishing world and how much return on investment the publisher anticipates receiving on the sale of the book.

But often new authors – those who have yet to be published – are not given the opportunity to work with traditional book publishers and even if they are given that opportunity they are not provided the marketing support given to more well-known writers. In this respect, self publishing becomes an option that allows writers to market themselves aggressively and get the word out there about their work, which we’ll discuss in the next post.

How to Publish a Book that Tells Your Story

Filed under: Book Publishers, How To Publish A Book — Book Publishers Expert @ 5:55 pm

Autobiographies are the sorts of work that are typically well-received when they are written by the rich and/or famous. We love to know the behind-the-scenes scoop on what happens in celebrities’ lives – or the back story behind our most famous icons. And when they write their story themselves – from their own perspective instead of their history being detailed and commented on from another source, as it is in a biography – we get to really feel close to the person in a way that answers most, if not all, of our burning questions.

Now we ourselves may think that we have quite the story to tell and that may be true. But the other truism is that people are not likely going to want to read our story if we are not someone who they know or can relate to in some way. An autobiography may be compelling, utterly well written, and completely current but if it’s written by a writer that no one has heard of it is unlikely that book publishers will take notice.

This doesn’t completely count out the option of writing and even publishing an autobiography; especially when there are self publishing methods that writers can pursue. With all of the many online options available to us today, self publishing companies have taken advantage of the opportunity to get in front of their target audience and give them the convenience of uploading and printing their book from the comfort of their own home – showing them essentially how to publish a book on their own.

For those who have penned what they believe to be a profound autobiography but are discouraged by the opportunities available to get in front of traditional book publishers, self publishing sites open up a whole new world of possibilities; and can put writers who are just entering the world of book publishing in the driver’s seat of their career.

Self Publishing for a Young Adult

Filed under: Book Publishers, Self Publishing — Book Publishers Expert @ 10:55 am

My daughter has always known that she wants to be a writer; something that her 7th grade English teacher has only validated by really taking her under her wing and giving her advice about submitting some of her stories to contests they hold for her age group. Under her tutelage my daughter has really blossomed and she continues to write with fervor on a daily basis. She has so many pieces that she has written that she decided that she really wanted to put all of her work together so that she would have a memento for when she is older and she could look back at her younger work and even share it with her own children one day.

At first she was just going to print everything off her own computer and assemble it that way but with some online research I presented her with another option in self publishing. I told her that she didn’t need to actually work with book publishers in order to see her work in book form; instead she could choose self publishing and put all of her work together under one cover; something truly special for a keepsake.

It was actually a very simple process that we did together. Through a self publishing site that we found – one that had received high praise in the industry – we uploaded all of her work in one document. Then, I helped my daughter choose the size of the book that she wanted, the type of binding, and even helped her upload a piece of her own artwork that she wanted to use as book cover art. We ordered extra copies for members of our family and then we approved for printing.

Just a week later we had my daughter’s first book in our hands and it was even better than either of us expected. This professional and beautiful piece will not only serve as a keepsake but will hopefully continue to remind my daughter of what she wants to do with her life and encourage her to push hard toward her dream.

Compiling Work for Book Publishing

Filed under: Book Publishers, Book Publishing, Self Publishing — Book Publishers Expert @ 3:44 pm

Writers come in all shapes and sizes and at all stages of life; we write poetry, non-fiction, fiction, and all host of other genres. We make our living writing and we make our living at something else and write to make our own hearts sing. No matter what kind of writer we are, however, if we have a true love for the craft, we can never stop doing what makes us happy. So it may come to pass that we want to publish some of our work – as a compilation piece that includes many of the things that we have written over the years; and unable or unwilling to seek the approval of book publishers we may instead choose self publishing.

I reached this place three months ago when I wanted to see my blog on paper. I had found an online outlet for my musings and considered it my haven – my home away from home where I could write about those things that were most important to me and what was going on in my life. I loved doing it and it was well received by those who read it and followed it. I felt like a real writer. And eventually I wanted to really capture this experience in a real book that I could have for posterity.

It was actually a really cathartic experience. I compiled all of my blogs in one central location and then uploaded them to a self publishing website that I found online – one that came highly recommended by past customers. I was able to specify how I wanted my finished book to look and order the number of copies that I wanted.

In the end I had the memento that I wanted – all of my blogs in one place with a cover that was my own creation. Now I’m really a writer!

Book Publishing for Busy People

Filed under: Book Publishers — Book Publishers Expert @ 9:37 pm

To say someone is busy in this day and age is to say they are breathing; in other words, who isn’t busy? We are running to and from work, activities, school, and the millions of other things that we do during the course of a week; not to mention the fact that we are plugged in at all hours of the day with our many communication devices at the ready. If we are not doing at least five things simultaneously then we aren’t doing anything at all.

Internet businesses have responded by providing us with more conveniences by the day; ways in which we can plug in and have access to anything and everything we could ever want or need. We could be paying our bills while writing an email, all while our personalized holiday cards are being printed; it’s absolutely mind blowing when you consider all that is available to us.

Even book publishing has changed in the face of the Internet craze. Anyone interested in having their book published – be it their personal memoirs, a biography, a book of poetry, or a work of fiction – can simply logon to a reputable self publishing website and have the job taken care of within days. How easy is that?

So for us busy writers who are working 40+ hours a week at our day jobs (and who does that anymore? Fifty is the new forty!), are running the kids to their many activities, working out, cleaning the house, making/rescheduling/cancelling appointments, and generally living a life, book publishing is still a possibility.

Forget the book publishers in your head; the intimidating, judgmental sort who never let you do what you want. With self publishing you can have your cake, frost it, eat, and still work out afterwards – all for just a few minutes time online spent uploading your work and personalizing the printing process.

Traditional Book Publishers Not the Only Gig in Town

Filed under: Book Publishers — Book Publishers Expert @ 8:31 pm

When it comes to book publishing most of us have a very solid idea in our heads about what that process looks like; you write a book, present it to a literary agent, who in turn presents it to book publishers, and eventually one publisher chooses to print the book having been bowled over by its literary excellence. This of course, being the ideal scenario is often not what actually happens. Writers who are able at all to construct a story that has a beginning, a middle, and an end are lucky enough; for it to be called good by anyone other than their mother is a miracle; and for it to garner the attention of book publishers is something akin to winning the lottery. Most book publishers, in fact, will not accept unsolicited pieces of work; they must instead come to them represented by a literary agent. But literary agents are hard pressed to represent authors who have not yet been published. You see the dilemma.

When all is said and done there are in fact writers who find themselves on the lucky side of the coin when it comes to book publishing. And there are far more who do not. But this does not mean that their hopes and dreams of publishing are absolutely dashed. There is the option of self publishing which allows writers to realize their dreams even if the reality looks somewhat different.

Self publishing essentially puts the power of printing in the hands of the writer who, while learning how to publish a book, will make all decisions pertinent to the final product. Through self publishing avenues – nowadays found online – writers can choose everything from the quantity of books to be printed to the binding used on their book – all in the quest to see their work in print.

Book Publishers for the Modern World, Part II

Filed under: Book Publishers — Book Publishers Expert @ 10:01 am

In the last post we talked about the many conveniences offered by the Internet and how it has opened up new worlds in a variety of industries, including book publishing. While the traditional book publishers to which we would normally appeal after writing a book would typically be the last and final say in terms of whether or not a book would be published, today, there are other choices afforded to writers who wish to carry on with or without a traditional book publishing house at their side. This option, of course, is that of self publishing – a process that is now easily accessed online and through which writers can determine the road to be traveled in terms of printing their work.

Through a self publishing service writers can essentially act as their own book publisher. They determine how many quantities they would like to print initially and can certainly choose to print more runs of the book at a later date if they so choose. Further, other details that are addressed through self publishing include the choice of cover art, the binding that is to be used on the finished book, the paper stock to be used, and the choice of ink and font used throughout the book.

Of course, self publishing is a process for which the writer pays out of their own pocket. But this in no way deters the finished product from making money if the writer is dedicated about marketing their own work and getting it into places where it will made available to the general public for sale. Many a popular and ultimately successful work started out in self publishing; it is only another option that can be explored by writers in addition to traditional book publishing. In fact, self publishing is something for which all writers can be grateful as it has offered yet another portal for writers to put their work in the hands of readers.

Book Publishers for the Modern World, Part I

Filed under: Book Publishers — Book Publishers Expert @ 3:34 pm

Sometimes the processes on which we have come to rely just don’t cut it in the modern world. As computerized as we are, we are a society that turns more and more to the conveniences offered by our home computers and the Internet and those things that were once modern marvels in terms of convenience now appear antiquated in comparison. This is a world that moves swiftly and we are called upon to pay attention in order to keep pace. But in terms of options, the Internet has given us more choices than we could have ever thought possible and opened up a multitude of doors when it comes to pursuing our dreams.

Writers may think that the world of book publishing is one-dimensional, consisting of an all-knowing book publisher who sits in their chair and decides in one fell swoop which piece of work is worthy of being published and which is not. They are the occupants of the shiny glass buildings on notable city streets and they are the gatekeepers to publishing fame and fortune; their decision is obsolete, their judgment not be questioned.

This of course is a very sweeping and wholly inaccurate vision of the world of modern book publishing. Book publishers reside in towns and cities around the world and they typically specialize in genres of writing for which they choose the books that they feel will best suit their readers and will be a marketable piece of work that is able to make money for all involved. Nothing more, nothing less. But where does this leave the writer who does not fall under any particular umbrella and is not chosen by a book publisher? In the modern world of choice, where this leaves the writer is with the choice of putting the book aside for another time when it may better received by a publishing house, or going the route of self publishing whereby they themselves control the printing process; something we will discuss in the next post.

Educational Book Publishers

Filed under: Book Publishers — Book Publishers Expert @ 4:24 pm

Teacher’s have a challenging job preparing their students for the future and providing them with the basics needed to succeed in life. Regardless of the grade level, educational books are a useful tool for all educators in order to supplement and expand a positive learning environment. Educational book publishers offer printed materials, support materials, and textbooks geared toward helping teachers, students, and parents, as well as sometimes provide free online materials.

Book publishers that focus on printing educational materials have the responsibility of assuring developmentally appropriate resources and information geared to each specific grade level. Some book publishers focus on teaching skills such as math, language arts, reading programs, science, social studies, health, and music. Educational materials also include formal assessment resources and various resources for teachers looking to expand their professional development.

Book publishers may choose to focus on one certain type of educational material instead of an entire Kindergarten through twelve curriculum. For example, storytelling guides, folktales, fairy tales, picture books, handwriting skills, educational workbooks, craft books, activity and fun books. The educational books, depending on the book publisher, will print in hardcover, paperback, or in board book format.

Book publishers may also choose to print and develop books dealing with children’s emotions, fears, anxieties, or dealing with childhood or family members’ illnesses. Having books in print available to teachers and parents allows for greater success in helping children understand, cope, and strategize problem solving techniques.

In addition, in this ever expanding world of technology, children are now involved at an earlier age in learning about computers and other electronic resources of information. Book publishers may also expand their topics by focusing on education resources geared toward teaching computers or specific learning series available through computer programs.
By providing high-quality materials, book publishers are providing a solid foundation for future successes for teachers, students, and parents.
