Proposals Must Capture The Attention Of Book Publishers

Writing a book is only half the battle. The next steps involved in the process of learning how to publish a book can actually be more difficult than the writing itself. When capturing the attention of book publishers is vital, it all begins with the proposal. If a proposal shines, chances are book publishers will look further. If it doesn’t, the author will likely find doors close at the speed of light.

Proposals are the bread and butter of the publishing industry. Since book publishers do not have the time to fully read every manuscript sent to them, they rely on proposals to determine what they’d like to consider and which projects should land in the circular file.

To make sure a proposal shines, authors need to make sure a few things are included. The basic parts of a professional proposal that book publishers like to receive are:

Introduction letter – This is a brief introduction of the author and the book. It generally includes a few statements about why people will want to read the manuscript and encourages book publishers to go further into the proposal.

Chapter outlines and summaries – This highlights each chapter and its focus and/or action. Some authors also include a sample chapter or two.

Market research – When learning how to publish a book, this really matters. It shows publishers basic information on the niche market, potential demand for the book, other similar books and even points out why the manuscript presented is better than what is available presently.

Author biography – A very brief biography is also helpful when approaching book publishers.

Approaching book publishers is one of the most difficult steps in learning how to get a book published. When a good proposal presents the material, the chances of capturing interest can be greatly increased.
